California Cup #1 Registration now open!

California Cup #1 (Cal Classic) will take place online (Discord) on Saturday, November 13. We are using NAQT IS-206 for the Competitive+Standard divisions and NAQT IS-207A for the Novice division. Like last year, teams will pay for each tournament separately. Teams consist of up to six members. This will likely be the only Cal Cup tournament that is a direct qualifier for HSNCT (must be in Competitive in order to qualify).

Register for Cal Cup #1 here (need an NAQT account in order to register). Indicate any staff (and their name(s)) that your team is bringing on your registration page

Cal Cup #2 on Discord is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, December 18 (the same weekend as last year). We have not yet confirmed the date/location for Cal Cups #3 and #4.

Update on Sac HS Tournament

We have closed the field (for now) for the Oct 23 Sacramento HS tournament; however, we are letting all schools (Bay Area/out of state/middle schools/etc.) sign up for the waitlist. We will expand the field if we can get more staff. Register here

ACF Fall HS Mirror (Oct 17)

The Northern California Quiz Bowl Alliance, in collaboration with Southern California Quiz Bowl and the Georgia Academic Team Association, is pleased to announce that the CA+GA high school site of 2021 ACF Fall will be held on Zoom on Sunday, October 17, 2021. This competition is open to all high schools in the states of California and Georgia but teams should be aware that the questions featured are harder than a typical high school school; teams that are new to quiz bowl should not play this tournament. The field cap is 18 teams; Monday, October 11 is the last day to register.

Please view previous ACF Fall questions here to see if this tournament is appropriate for your team.

Complete details (including how to register) are here.

CA Fall Novice Tournament (Oct 30)

The California Fall Novice Tournament will take place online (Discord) on Saturday, October 30; we plan to use the SCOP Novice set for this event. All high schools from California are welcome to compete (middle school teams cannot compete– sorry!) We are using the same eligibility standards as last year (listed here).

Ineligible high school students are invited to help staff [note: we are not able to provide volunteer hours if working for a non-profit is a requirement].

Freddie O’Hara (of SoCal Quiz Bowl) will handle payment- via Venmo (@Frederic-OHara), PayPal (freddieoharaiii@gmail.com), or check. Let us know if you are planning to pay via check and we will send you the details.

Please send any eligibility questions to caquizbowl@gmail.com (same email address that we used last year)

Register here. Complete details are here

Fall Calendar

Hello Players, Coaches, and Parents!

Welcome to the new school year! We hope everyone had a pleasant and healthy summer.

1) Based on the results of the team survey (here– if your school has not already submitted), most Bay Area schools prefer to wait until Spring to resume in-person events. Therefore, we plan to continue with online Bay Area events for the foreseeable future.

[Note: Sacramento-area schools generally prefer to return to in-person in the fall. Thus, it is possible that we will run an in-person Sac HS tournament on October 23- stay tuned for details.]

2) Like last Fall, we plan to run an (online) all-CA novice competition. We are thinking about either Oct 9 or Oct 30 for this event; please fill out this survey and let us know what your team thinks.

3) Expect an announcement regarding Cal Cup by the end of September.

4) Oct 16 and Nov 6 will be college tournaments so it is unlikely that we will run any high school tournaments on those dates.

Results from Middle School National Tournaments

Congratulations to Churchill A for winning the 2021 MSNCT! Other high-placing NorCal teams include Stanford Online (4th place), Challenger-Strawberry Park A (tied for 7th place), and Bret Harte (tied for 10th place).

Congratulations to Arin from Stanford Online for winning the 2021 Middle School Individual Player National Championship Tournament! Five other NorCal players finished in the top 10: Aatreyo, Pranavkrishna, Tanay, Shounak, and Mahit. Arin was also the top scorer (playing solo!) at MSNCT.
